How to upgrade Firefox on Ubuntu

Last updated on January 3, 2014 by Dan Nanni

Question: I want to update default Firefox that comes installed on Ubuntu, to the latest version of Firefox. What is a proper way to upgrade Firefox on Ubuntu?

Upgrading any pre-installed Ubuntu package such as firefox can easily be done via a GUI package manager called Synaptic.

If Synaptic is not installed yet, install it as follows.

$ sudo apt-get install synaptic

Close all open Firefox windows.

Launch Synaptic via Ubuntu Dash as follows.

Search for firefox package on Synaptic.

Highlight firefox package, right-click it, and select "Mark for Upgrade" option.

It may pop up a window asking for upgrading additional packages. Make them as well.

Finally, click on Apply button on Synaptic to trigger upgrade.
